Jim Edmonds hit a three-run double and scored on a pair of errors during a pivotal at-bat in the fifth inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3 Wednesday night. Jason Marquis worked around a three-run homer by Carlos Lee in an otherwise solid six-inning stint, and Scott Rolen had two RBIs to take the team lead with 11 for the Cardinals. St. Louis is 2-0 at new Busch Stadium after going 50-31 both on the road and at old Busch last season. |

Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin is running out of patience. And he's happy about it. After three years of filling holes with prospects who might not quite be ready for the major leagues, Melvin and the Brewers enter the 2006 season with a more robust roster and a better idea of who will be playing where. |

Milwaukee's Doug Davis pitched like an opening day starter, Arizona's Brandon Webb didn't. Both are scheduled to take the mound in their team's season openers, but Davis and the Brewers had by far the best of it in a 16-5 romp over Webb and the Diamondbacks on Friday. Gabe Gross was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Prince Fielder 2-for-3 with four RBIs and four runs for Milwaukee, which finished with 20 hits. Five other Brewers had two hits. |

Even though all that baserunning affected Jeff Francis' delivery, he eventually settled down as the Colorado Rockies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-6 Monday night. Francis singled twice, scored twice and drove in a run, delivering an RBI single in the top of the fourth. He scored from first base later in the inning, sliding underneath a tag at the plate in a three-run inning. Francis gave up four runs and five hits in six innings, but allowed all his runs in the first three innings. |

Mark Teixeira had his first multi-hit game of the spring to help the Texas Rangers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Sunday. Teixeira went 2-for-4 with a double - his first extra base hit. He also had a fielder's choice off his bat in the seventh that tied the game 3-3. The All-Star first baseman had struggled to find his timing since going 0-for-15 for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. |

The Brewers had a series of nagging injuries in the final days of camp but nothing that should affect the regular lineup for any period of time. No. 1 pitcher Ben Sheets will start the season on the DL while he continues his recovery from a shoulder injury from last season, prompting the other starters in the rotation to be bumped up a spot. But the Brewers are hopeful that Sheets will only miss the first week or two of the season, at the worst. ROTATION: 1. |

He is a top candidate for a long relief job. --RHP Rick Helling, trying to build up innings to start the season as a long reliever, is slated to throw four innings or 60 pitches in a minor league game Tuesday. The Brewers will not use Helling in a major league game in case they need to backdate a stint on the disabled list. |

Second baseman Rickie Weeks, sidelined two weeks with a strained right oblique muscle, is getting better just in time to start the season. Weeks played in a minor league game Sunday, getting five at-bats, then went 0-for-3 in a Cactus League game against Colorado on Monday. As camp winds down, Weeks has amassed just 29 at-bats and is hitting .276. A bigger concern this spring has been Weeks' defense. |
